Studies for the new car, ART-16, are taking place in all departments of the ARUS team in the beginning of this season. The aim is to analyze every possible improvement that can carry us to a better score in the FSAE design competition. The department of engine had the opportunity of quantify the maximum power that our past car ART-15 is capable of supplying.

As you already know, ART-15 has the engine of a motorbike HONDA CBR 600RR and we thought it would be very productive being able to evaluate the mechanical or electronical changes that the team wants to implement about the engine’s efficiency.

This measurement has been carried out in Diesel Gallardo, where a very qualified staff works in all types of mechanical auto repairs, and who also has a roller dynamometer for the purpose that we were looking for: measuring the engine power of ART-15.

These tests in the inertial rollers need to be made with great acceleration loads, because they are not able to appreciate the performance of the engine with constant revolutions (rpm). The potency assay begins, once the driving wheels are placed on the rollers (in our case the rear), with a motor preheating for a correct temperature of the oil and refrigerant liquid. The assay is performed in the shortest possible gear, that is, one whose change reduces least possible the motor speed at the wheels. This is because in the low gears are further reduced so that the transmission is less efficient, generates more losses and less power which is transmitted to the wheels. The driver must accelerates quickly from slow motion to the cut-off injection point, and then, put the car in neutral and let the engine stop on its own for capturing braking losses from the kinematic transmission.


While this happens and depending on the engine’s acceleration, specialized electronics associates and generates the power and losses curves corresponding to analysis values.

Unfortunately, we had difficulties with accurately measuring because the roller is ready for street vehicles and not for a race car like ours. The high acceleration coupled with the small size of ART-15 caused counterfeiting measure.

Despite difficulties in measurement models, ART-15 and Arus team were very satisfied because the treatment received by the Diesel Gallardo’s staff could not be better. They helped us trying to find a solution and invited us to come back again when we needed it.
